Curug Luhur, Waterfall in West Java, Indonesia
Curug Luhur is a waterfall complex in West Java featuring three major cascades flowing side by side with a blue-green pool beneath them. The three falls create a wide water formation with rocky cliffs surrounding the entire site.
The site took its name from the Cikaso River that supplies water to the falls and has been connected to this place for many generations. The local population sometimes refers to the falls by an alternative name that reflects this long relationship with the river.
The three separate falls each have their own local names that reflect how people in the area identify and relate to them individually. These names reveal how the community has long understood and connected with this natural site.
You can reach the site on foot through rice fields from the main road or by boat down the Cikaso River to reach the base of the falls. Morning visits work best for viewing, as the light conditions throughout the day change how the water and surrounding rocks appear.
Early morning sunlight breaking through the water spray creates natural light effects that are only visible during the sunrise period when the sun sits at the right angle. These optical phenomena fade as the sun rises higher and the angle of light changes throughout the morning.
