Badut

Candi Badut is an ancient Hindu temple in Malang with a square main building made of andesite stone and four corner chambers. The structure displays relief sculptures and includes several smaller shrines surrounded by old walls.

The temple was built around 760 CE during the Kanjuruhan Kingdom period and stands as the earliest known temple construction in East Java. It demonstrates how Hindu architecture became established in the region during that era.

The shrine displays carved Hindu deities in wall niches, and the central chamber contains symbols associated with Shiva and Parvati. These representations show how local craftspeople documented religious beliefs in stone.

The site is located near Ma Chung University and is reachable by public transportation. Wearing comfortable shoes is advisable since the grounds have uneven surfaces and require walking over varied terrain.

The shrine faces west, an unusual orientation that sets it apart from most other temples in East Java. This particular feature may indicate specific religious or astronomical considerations by the ancient builders.
