Juanda International Airport, International airport in Sidoarjo, Indonesia
Juanda International Airport is a commercial aviation hub in Sidoarjo, on the island of Java, serving as the primary air traffic center for East Java. The complex includes two separate terminal buildings with multiple check-in counters, waiting lounges and retail outlets, plus a single runway handling hundreds of daily takeoffs and landings.
Originally opened in 1964 as a military naval air base, the facility gradually transitioned to civilian use over the following years. International certification arrived in 1990 when new passenger buildings and customs zones were added to accommodate cross-border travel.
Named after a former Indonesian premier who championed aviation development, this hub now serves as the main gateway to the nation's second-largest city. The terminal buildings reflect modern Indonesian design while accommodating millions of passengers traveling between Java and the rest of the archipelago.
The complex sits roughly 12 kilometers south of central Surabaya and can be reached by bus, taxi or private transfer. Facilities are designed for wheelchair access with elevators and ramps throughout public areas.
The runway sits just 3 meters (10 feet) above sea level, which means pilots must account for proximity to the ocean during approach and departure. Despite this low elevation, the facility regularly handles more than 400 aircraft movements in a single day.
