Biak Numfor, Administrative region in Papua, Indonesia
Biak Numfor is an administrative region in Papua comprising two main islands and around 50 smaller ones scattered across the Padaido Archipelago. The territory sits within Cenderawasih Bay in northeastern Indonesia and includes scattered coastal settlements and fishing communities across multiple islands.
The region served as a major military outpost during World War II when Japanese forces built an airfield on the islands. American forces subsequently took control of this airfield and used it as a strategic position in their Pacific operations.
The local communities keep alive traditional music and dance forms that blend ukulele melodies with hand-drum rhythms during celebrations and gatherings. These performances remain central to how people mark important occasions and connect with their heritage.
Frans Kaisiepo Airport links the region to major Indonesian cities with regular flights serving the area. Inter-island travel happens by boat and ferry services, which requires planning around local schedules and weather conditions.
The waters surrounding the islands hold submerged World War II ships and aircraft that now function as artificial reefs. These underwater relics support thriving marine ecosystems and attract schools of fish and other sea life.
