Gough Whitlam's birthplace, Residential house in Kew, Australia
The house at 46 Rowland Street features a brick structure with Marseille pattern terracotta tile roof and detailed timber finishes throughout the building.
Martha and Fred Whitlam purchased this Edwardian villa in December 1914, where their son Gough Whitlam, future Prime Minister of Australia, was born in 1916.
The residence received the name Ngara, derived from the Darug Aboriginal language, meaning to listen, hear, and think, reflecting local indigenous heritage.
The property, located in the Melbourne suburb of Kew, remained a private residence until its demolition in May 2016 despite preservation attempts by local communities.
The birth location holds significance as Gough Whitlam was born on the kitchen table of this house on July 11, 1916.
