Established by Gaspar de Portolà in 1769, it was the first European settlement on the Pacific Coast.
The Presidio served as a significant social and cultural hub during Spanish colonization time.
Nowadays, it functions as a museum and public park.
It has actively evolved from being a Spanish presidio to a Mexican one, and then an American military outpost.
