Playa Montelimar, Pacific beach in San Rafael del Sur, Nicaragua
Playa Montelimar is a Pacific sand beach in the municipality of San Rafael del Sur, Nicaragua, lined with palm trees and dark volcanic sand typical of the country's Pacific coastline. The Barcelo Hotel and Resort sits directly on the shore and is the main facility serving this part of the beach.
The land was originally owned by German immigrants and was seized by the government during World War II, eventually passing into the hands of the Somoza family. After the fall of the Somoza dictatorship, the property was turned into a resort open to tourism.
The beach is mostly visited by guests staying at the resort, which gives the shore a relatively calm and controlled feel compared to other Pacific beaches in Nicaragua. Local vendors sometimes gather near the access points, offering fruit or handmade goods to passersby.
Access to the beach is managed through the Barcelo Hotel and Resort, so it is worth checking in advance what conditions apply for non-guests. The beach itself faces the open Pacific, which means waves can be strong and swimmers should take care.
Before becoming a tourist resort, the property served as a private retreat for the Somoza family, who used it as a personal estate. It was later the first site in Nicaragua to be taken over by an international hotel chain, which made it a turning point in how the country approached tourism.
