Lake Betania

Lake Betania is a large reservoir in the Andean region of Colombia, created by damming the Magdalena River to form a substantial water body. The basin serves multiple uses, with activity concentrated along its shoreline and across the surface.

The dam was constructed in the early 1970s to harness the Magdalena River flow and create a large water storage system. This project marked a major step in Colombia's development of modern water infrastructure.

The reservoir is a working place where local fishing communities gather daily, relying on the water for their livelihood and passing down their skills to younger generations. These connections between people and the lake shape the rhythm of life in the surrounding villages.

The lake is accessible from the town of Yaguará, where you can arrange boat access for water activities. Visiting during the drier months provides better conditions for outdoor activities on and around the water.

The lake operates as a hydroelectric power plant while also hosting fish farming operations across its surface. This dual use makes it an economic hub that produces both energy and food for surrounding areas.
