El Cerrito, Valle del Cauca

El Cerrito is a municipality on the western slope of the Central Cordillera in Valle del Cauca. The terrain varies across its territory, creating different growing conditions and natural environments throughout the region.

The settlement began in the late 1700s as a farming community centered on a sugar production estate. It grew into a recognized municipality during the 1800s as the region developed.

The literary heritage here connects to the classic Colombian novel María by Jorge Isaacs, which drew inspiration from the local landscape. When you walk through the region, you can recognize the scenes that inspired this important work of the 1800s.

The town center is located where Calle 10 meets Carrera 20, serving as the main reference point for orientation. The climate stays warm throughout the year, so bring light clothing regardless of the season.

The area contains three distinct climate zones within its borders, each supporting different types of farming. This natural variety allows growers to cultivate everything from highland grapes to tropical flowers in nearby lowland areas.
