El Cerrito extends over 466 square kilometers on the western slope of the Central Cordillera, with an average elevation of 967 meters.
The settlement was established in 1797 around Hacienda San Jerónimo de los Ingenios and received municipal status in 1864.
Hacienda El Paraíso serves as the setting for the renowned Colombian novel María by Jorge Isaacs from 1867.
The town hall is located at Calle 10 with Carrera 20, with an average temperature of 24 degrees Celsius throughout the year.
The area features three climate zones enabling cultivation of grapes, sugarcane, corn, soybeans, rice, and tropical flowers.
