Melgar

Melgar is a municipality in Tolima Department located in a river valley at about 323 meters elevation. The area features a moderate climate and sits between two major cities of the region.

The settlement originated in 1720 as Cualamana but was rebuilt in 1789 by Dominican missionaries near the Sumapaz River after a major fire. This resettlement marked the start of the place's modern development.

The town is known throughout Colombia for its numerous swimming pools and is often called the Swimming Pool City. These pools shape the character of the place and are a central part of daily life for residents.

The town is well served by bus transportation, especially for visitors from the capital traveling on weekends. A transport hub makes connections to major destinations in the region straightforward.

A military air base is located within the municipality and serves as a key installation for Colombian defense forces. This military presence has shaped the town's infrastructure and development over decades.
