La Mesa

La Mesa is a municipality situated on a highland plateau in the Eastern Andes at roughly 1,200 meters elevation, positioned about 65 kilometers southwest of Bogota. The settlement follows a traditional colonial layout centered around its religious and administrative buildings.

The municipality was founded in 1777 under the name Guayabal, later relocating to its present location to access better water sources. This move marked an important adjustment in the settlement's development as the population grew.

The Chapel of Santa Barbara remains central to local identity, shaping how residents gather and marking important community moments throughout the year.

The weekly market operates on Wednesdays and Sundays, where local farmers sell fresh produce including fruits grown at lower elevations nearby. The best time to visit is during drier months when roads are more accessible and the landscape is easier to explore.

Paleontological work in the area has uncovered fossil remains that help scientists understand prehistoric marine environments that once existed here. These discoveries reveal that this highland region was submerged beneath ancient seas millions of years ago.
