Guavio Reservoir

Guavio Reservoir is a large body of water in Cundinamarca Department situated at an elevation of approximately 1,600 meters above sea level. The water extends about 390 meters in length and serves as a major water resource in this mountainous region.

The reservoir was completed in 1989 and marked a turning point for water management in eastern Cundinamarca. Its construction transformed how the region handled water resources and updated the area's infrastructure.

The reservoir plays a role in daily life for nearby communities, where boats serve as a practical means to cross the water between villages. This water route has become woven into how residents move through their landscape.

The best route is via paved roads from Bogotá, with travel taking around five hours through mountainous terrain. The roads are well-maintained, though the winding mountain paths require a comfortable pace of travel.

The water sits where different ecosystems meet, with high-altitude moorlands above and dense forests below creating distinct zones. This mix of environments makes the area worth observing for its natural variation.
