Chinácota is a municipality in Norte de Santander in northeastern Colombia near the Venezuelan border. The area sits in hilly terrain and consists of a town center with surrounding rural neighborhoods.
Spanish conquistadors established Chinácota in 1553 as part of their mission to settle indigenous peoples in the region. Over the centuries, it developed as an administrative and community center in this border area.

The area has a cool highland climate with temperatures ranging between 12 and 22°C throughout the year and changing only slightly by season. Visitors should prepare for uneven terrain and bring layers since rain occurs regularly.
