Province of Georgia, Former British colonial territory in North America.

The Province of Georgia was a British colonial territory in North America that stretched from the southern boundary of South Carolina down to the Spanish territories of Florida. The region included coastal lowlands with marshes and wetlands, as well as interior plains suitable for farming and settlement.

James Oglethorpe established the territory in 1732 as the final addition to the thirteen original British colonies in North America. The colony initially functioned as a buffer zone between South Carolina and Spanish Florida, later developing into an independent economic region.

The territory takes its name from King George II of England, reflecting the royal patronage behind the colony. The trusteeship model banned slaveholding initially and aimed to establish a different agricultural system than the plantation model of neighboring colonies.

Savannah served as the administrative center with a grid layout and public squares that hosted community meetings. The port city facilitated trade and served as an entry point for new settlers arriving from Europe.

A board of trustees governed the territory for the first two decades without an elected assembly. The administration enforced uncommon regulations, including a ban on rum and restrictions on the size of individual landholdings.
