This remarkable tree was accidentally cut down in 1964 by a graduate student and the United States Forest Service personnel.
The name Prometheus is a reference to the Greek mythological figure who defied the gods by giving fire to humanity.
Prometheus grew in a remote area within Great Basin National Park's Wheeler Peak grove.
Until its cutting, Prometheus was considered among the oldest living individual trees.
