Central Aceh extends across 4,527 square kilometers of mountainous terrain at elevations between 200 and 2,600 meters above sea level in Sumatra.
The region underwent administrative changes when Southeast Aceh separated from it in 1974, followed by Bener Meriah Regency's separation in December 2003.
The Gayo ethnic group forms the primary population of Central Aceh, maintaining their traditions through festivals and ceremonies across fourteen districts.
Takengon, the capital city of Central Aceh, functions as the administrative center, where government offices and commercial activities concentrate.
