Central Aceh, Administrative regency in Aceh province, Indonesia
Central Aceh is a regency in Aceh province on Sumatra that spreads across mountainous terrain with elevations ranging from 200 to 2,600 meters. The region comprises fourteen districts with Takengon serving as the administrative hub.
This region took its current form through administrative changes when Southeast Aceh separated in 1974, followed by Bener Meriah Regency breaking away in 2003. These shifts shaped the boundaries seen today.
The Gayo people form the main population here and shape daily life through their crafts, farming practices, and regular celebrations that mark the seasons.
Takengon serves as the main city and administrative center where visitors find shops, services, and basic facilities. From here, other parts of the region are reachable via mountain roads.
Lake Laut Tawar sits at 1,624 meters elevation and offers fishing, boating, and swimming opportunities surrounded by mountains. The lake holds importance for both locals and travelers exploring the area.
