Sabang

Sabang is a port city located on Weh Island off northern Sumatra, serving as a regional maritime hub. The settlement includes several surrounding islands and handles significant shipping traffic due to its strategic location at a major sea route.

The city developed under Dutch colonial administration when foreign ships first accessed the natural harbor in 1883. A decade later, it gained free port status and became a significant trading center for the region.

The population of Sabang follows Islamic traditions, reflected in the implementation of Sharia law across the Aceh province since 2001.

A local airport serves the island with small aircraft, while the deep-water port handles cargo for the regional maritime economy. Visitors should be aware that accessibility depends on seasonal conditions and shipping activities.

The city marks both the northernmost and westernmost point of Indonesia while sitting at the entrance to the Malacca Strait. This extreme geographic position makes it a rare place where two national boundaries converge.
