HMS Valkyrie

HMS Valkyrie was a naval training establishment on Douglas Head with multiple training areas and equipment for radar instruction. The facility used converted local buildings to accommodate a large number of students.

The Royal Navy established the facility in October 1941 as the No. 1 Radar Training School with significant investment in technical equipment. It played an important role in preparing naval personnel for modern warfare technology.

The establishment attracted naval personnel from several countries, including French sailors who trained here under French officers. This international makeup made it a meeting point for different naval traditions during wartime.

The site is located on Douglas Head and accessible from the outside, but offers no visitor facilities as an active establishment today. It is best to explore the surroundings and view the architecture from various angles.

During training operations, the facility partnered with a Sea Hurricane aircraft to conduct attack simulations. This collaboration allowed practical exercises under realistic conditions for radar instruction.
