Fort Regent, Military fortification on Mont de la Ville, Saint Helier, Jersey
Fort Regent is an expansive military fortification on Mont de la Ville with substantial curtain walls, ditches, bastions, and redans overlooking the harbor and Elizabeth Castle. The structure was designed to defend Jersey's bay from seaborne threats.
Construction began in 1806 during the Napoleonic Wars, employing around 800 workers and Royal Engineers until completion in 1814. The project reflected Britain's military strategy to protect the islands from French invasion.
The site once held prehistoric remains, including a dolmen discovered during ground preparation in 1785. This finding reveals that the location had been significant to people thousands of years before the fort was built.
The site now operates as a leisure center with sports facilities and entertainment spaces accessible via pathways from Saint Helier. Comfortable shoes are recommended since the grounds are hilly with multiple levels to explore.
Between 1806 and 1808, engineers drilled a deep well shaft through granite to tap one of Jersey's deepest water sources. This engineering feat was essential for supplying the garrison with fresh water during peacetime and potential siege.
