Hohlgangsanlage 8, Underground military hospital in Saint Lawrence, Jersey
Hohlgangsanlage 8 is an underground military hospital in Saint Lawrence featuring over 1,000 meters of concrete and steel tunnels. The facility extends 50 meters below ground and was originally designed as a fully functional medical complex.
German forces built this hospital complex between 1941 and 1943 as part of the Atlantic Wall defense system during their occupation of Jersey. The work was carried out deep underground to protect against air attacks.
The tunnel complex serves as a museum where visitors can see wartime objects, photographs, and personal stories about the German occupation of Jersey. Walking through the passages gives a sense of how people lived and worked in this underground space during that period.
The facility is wheelchair accessible through ramps and lifts, with bus routes 8 and 28 connecting directly from Liberation Station. The underground environment can be cooler than outside, so appropriate clothing is advisable.
The underground structure features original gas-proof doors and preserves medical equipment from wartime use. The drainage system was ingeniously built into the rock formation and still functions today.
