Chair of Saint Peter, Catholic relic in Vatican City
The Chair of Saint Peter is a wooden throne that was traditionally believed to have been used by Saint Peter, the leader of the Apostles.
The chair was enshrined by Pope Alexander VII in 1666 and it has been protected by Gian Lorenzo Bernini's bronze casing since then.
It symbolizes the continuing line of apostolic succession from Peter to the reigning Pope.
It is located in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City and can be visited during the basilica's opening hours.
Despite its name, the Chair of Saint Peter is not used for seating but serves as a symbol.
