Saint John's Tower

Saint John's Tower is a round stone building located at the westernmost point of Vatican City, overlooking the Vatican Gardens. The structure now houses administrative offices and remains a functioning part of Vatican operations today.

The building was constructed as part of a defensive wall under Pope Nicholas III. After falling into decay during the early 1500s, it was rebuilt and restored under Pope John XXIII.

Saint John's Tower functions as temporary papal residence when maintenance occurs at the Apostolic Palace, maintaining a connection to Vatican leadership traditions.

The building is located within the restricted areas of Vatican City and is not open to public visits. Visitors can view it from outside the complex or see it from certain vantage points when touring the Vatican Gardens.

In 2008, the tower served as an unusual venue for a high-level diplomatic meeting when a major world leader was received here instead of at the customary location. This choice highlights how the building plays a varied role in Vatican diplomacy.
