Gailtal, Alpine valley in Carinthia, Austria
The Gailtal is an alpine valley in Carinthia that stretches between the Gailtal Alps to the north and the Carnic Alps to the south. The landscape features green meadows, forests, and mountain slopes that unfold from east to west.
The valley was shaped by a major rockfall event around 1348 near Villach, which left behind massive stone blocks. These geological traces remain visible in the lower valley area today.
The valley is home to German-speaking Austrians and Slovene communities, and both languages echo through daily life in shops and villages. This blend of traditions shapes how people here see themselves and their home.
Hermagor is the main service hub of the valley with shops and facilities for visitors. In winter, the Nassfeld ski area offers downhill and cross-country options that are easily reached from the main villages.
The valley is home to the Weißensee, a mountain lake at an elevation that makes it the highest swimming lake in Austria. The cool, clear water and mountain backdrop make it a special place to swim in summer.
