Burgruine Senftenberg, Medieval castle ruins in Senftenberg, Austria.
Burgruine Senftenberg are the remains of a medieval castle on a hill overlooking the Krems Valley in Senftenberg. From this elevated position, you can see across the local vineyard areas and the landscape below.
The castle was first mentioned in written records in 1197 with Ruedeger de Senftenberc as the owner. Over the following centuries, it changed hands multiple times under Austrian rulers.
The ruins hold protected monument status and show how medieval fortifications were built in this region. You can still see how the castle dominated the surrounding vineyards and valley below.
The ruins are free to visit throughout the year and can be reached from the town center. The paths up are marked, and it is best to wear sturdy shoes for the climb.
The fortress served as a shelter for local people during Turkish invasions in 1529. Later, Swedish troops under General Torstenson destroyed and set it ablaze in 1645.
