Lengberg Castle, Medieval castle in Nikolsdorf, Austria
Lengberg Castle is a medieval fortified residence standing on a hilltop near the Carinthian border, displaying Late-Gothic design elements across two main stories. The structure includes residential quarters, a chapel, and defensive walls that were characteristic of aristocratic strongholds of that period.
The castle was founded in 1190 by the Counts of Lechsgemünde as an administrative center for their territories. In the 13th century, it transferred to the Archbishop of Salzburg, marking a shift in its political and religious function.
The chapel within the castle grounds remains dedicated to Saints Sebastian and Nicholas, reflecting the spiritual importance this place held for the local community. Today, visitors can still sense this religious character in the structure and its layout.
The castle sits on a hillside location that offers views across the surrounding landscape and is accessible by foot. The best time to visit is during warmer months when the grounds are dry and pathways are easy to navigate.
During restoration work in 2008, archaeologists uncovered a hidden vault containing 15th-century textiles that had been sealed away for centuries. Among the finds were four linen undergarments that reveal details about clothing practices and daily life from that distant era.
