The Austrian Open-Air Museum Stübing is a museum in Deutschfeistritz displaying more than 100 authentic rural buildings brought from different parts of Austria to this wooded site. The structures show how people lived and worked in the countryside in earlier times.
The museum was established to preserve historic rural farm culture across all of Austria; it is a founding member of the Association of European Open Air Museums, part of ICOM. Its 103 objects span six centuries. The oldest fully preserved structure, the grain granary from Silberberg near Großstübing, was dendrochronologically dated by the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences to 1452.
The buildings are grouped from east to west to mirror Austria's geography: reed- or straw-roofed structures from Burgenland come first, and the walk ends at an alpine hut from Vorarlberg. Interiors are furnished with original household goods, and the complex also holds an old school, a fire station, a village shop and a simple dance hut.
The grounds can be explored on marked paths that wind through the woodland and connect the buildings. Comfortable shoes are recommended since the paths are hilly and visits can take longer if you explore the interiors of the structures.
The museum site sits within a protected nature conservation zone that preserves forest habitats for native wildlife. This combination of cultural museum and environmental protection creates a place where history and ecology meet.
