Wien-Umgebung District, former district of the state of Lower Austria in Austria
Wien-Umgebung was a former administrative district in Lower Austria that surrounded Vienna and consisted of 21 non-contiguous municipalities spread to the north, south, and west of the city. The territory was shaped by villages with traditional architecture, farms, green fields, and modern infrastructure including Vienna International Airport in Schwechat.
The district was created in 1954 after Vienna's borders were adjusted to manage the rapidly growing city and its surroundings. In 2017, Wien-Umgebung was dissolved and its municipalities were incorporated into neighboring districts to simplify administration and reduce costs.
As a former district, Wien-Umgebung no longer functions as an administrative unit, but the municipalities that once belonged to it remain easily accessible from Vienna via good road and rail connections. Most of these towns have local shops, cafes, and restaurants where visitors can enjoy traditional Austrian food.
The region was known for its viticulture along the Danube, particularly in Klosterneuburg with its terraced vineyards that preserve centuries-old traditions. This wine area offers visitors a glimpse into the long history of Austrian wine production and the local festivals connected to it.
