Zirbitzkogel, Summit and mountain peak in Styria, Austria
Zirbitzkogel is a mountain peak that forms the highest point of the Seetal Alps in Styria. Its rocky structure shows layers of slate, gneisses, and granites that are exposed on the steep slopes and rugged summit area.
The name comes from the Slovenian word 'zirbiza', which refers to the reddish mountain pastures covered in alpenrose flowers. These blooms have long shaped the appearance of the high meadows and influenced how the local landscape is remembered.
Local farmers maintain traditional grazing on the alpine meadows, where cattle, sheep, and horses spend the summer months moving freely across the open grasslands.
This area is best visited on foot during the dry months from June through September when trails are clear of snow. Sturdy footwear and weatherproof clothing are essential, as conditions at altitude can change quickly.
The summit area contains several small mountain lakes called Winterleitenseen that serve as a breeding ground for rare bird species. These waters offer a surprising sight on this exposed peak and draw visitors seeking to experience nature in its raw state.
