Burg Altpernstein

Burg Altpernstein is a medieval fortification located at 900 meters elevation between Kirchdorf and Micheldorf in Upper Austria. The castle has thick stone walls, multiple rooms serving different purposes, and is protected by a natural rocky ravine rather than a traditional moat.

The fortification was built around 1000 years ago and has served as a defensive stronghold in the region ever since. Major restoration work in recent years has helped preserve its original structural elements and overall character.

The hall where knights once gathered and the small chapel built into the walls show how people lived in a medieval fortress. Visitors can see how daily life was organized within these thick stone walls.

The site is best accessed on foot and offers good views of the surrounding landscape from its elevated position. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear because the walking paths are not always easy to navigate.

Inside the ancient walls are modern seminar rooms, showing how the fortress continues to serve as a venue for events and meetings today. This blend of medieval architecture with contemporary uses is unusual for such old structures.
