Franzensburg, Gothic castle in Laxenburg, Austria
The Franzensburg castle stands on artificial islands within the castle park, featuring medieval architectural elements and decorative stone carvings across its exterior walls.
Francis II commissioned architect Johann Ferdinand von Hohenberg to design this castle between 1801 and 1805 as part of the extensive Laxenburg complex.
The interior rooms display collections of medieval furnishings, armor, weapons, and paintings that represent Austrian noble life through different centuries.
Visitors reach the castle by walking through the park grounds or taking small boats across the surrounding water during regular opening hours from March to November.
The castle incorporates original architectural fragments from medieval buildings across Austria, creating an authentic historical appearance despite its relatively recent construction.
