Schloss Stainz, Gothic and Baroque castle in Stainz, Austria
Schloss Stainz is a three-floor building featuring Gothic and Baroque elements with ornate stucco work and historical frescoes throughout. The structure blends architectural styles from different periods, with richly decorated rooms reflecting its long history of use.
The building began in 1229 as an Augustinian monastery founded on a castle mountain by Leutold I von Wildon. It later transformed into a noble residence and has shaped the area ever since.
The castle houses two museums presenting hunting traditions and agricultural development in Styria. Visitors can explore how rural life connected to the noble residents through displayed collections.
The castle is available for event rentals, with the Refektorium dining hall accommodating up to 150 guests for meals or 250 in theater style. Visitors should plan ahead to select the right time for their interests.
Four well-preserved historical frescoes by artist Mathias Echter decorate the former monks' dining hall. A hidden feature is an internal spiral staircase connecting this room directly to a historic wine cellar below.
