Transalpine Pipeline, Oil pipeline from Trieste to Karlsruhe through Austria and Germany
The Transalpine Pipeline is an oil pipeline stretching roughly 750 kilometers from the port of Trieste on the Adriatic Sea to Karlsruhe, passing through Austria and Germany. The system crosses mountainous terrain and connects a southern harbor to distribution centers in central Europe.
The pipeline began operations in 1967 in response to Europe's growing energy demands. The project emerged during a period when new infrastructure for crude oil transport from the Mediterranean was urgently needed.
Eight international oil companies form a consortium to manage this infrastructure, representing a collaboration between European and American enterprises.
The system operates through several pumping stations along its route to maintain continuous oil flow. Visitors can follow the route by car or train, with marked locations and information points available at selected spots.
At several points the pipeline connects with other European pipeline systems, allowing exchange between different supply networks. These junction points play an important role in distributing crude oil to refineries across several countries.
