Bochumer Hut, Mountain hut in Kitzbühel Alps, Austria.
Bochumer Hut is a mountain refuge in the Kitzbühel Alps located at roughly 1,432 meters (4,700 feet) elevation that accommodates hikers and climbers with 22 beds and 48 additional mattresses. The facility includes a dining room, common areas, and simple sleeping quarters typical of Alpine huts in this part of Tyrol.
The hut was built in 1832 as shelter for copper miners working in the nearby mountains and later became associated with Alpine club activities. Ownership transferred to the Bochum Section of the Alpine club in 1964, solidifying its role as a mountain refuge.
Archaeological discoveries near Kelchalpe revealed Bronze Age copper mining artifacts, which are now displayed at the Kitzbühel town museum.
The hut opens seasonally from mid-April through October and again from December through March, with a 90-minute walk from Aurach bei Kitzbühel being the main approach. Plan for mountain weather conditions and bring appropriate clothing and footwear regardless of the season.
The hut displays original wooden features in its dining room that date from the copper mining era and connect visitors directly to this industrial past. These preserved elements give hikers a rare glimpse into the working conditions experienced by miners generations ago.
