Burg Vichtenstein, Medieval castle in Vichtenstein, Austria.

Burg Vichtenstein is a medieval hilltop castle perched above the Danube valley in Upper Austria, close to the border with Bavaria. It consists of a gatehouse, an inner courtyard, a chapel, and a defensive tower arranged in the compact layout typical of a fortified high castle.

The castle was founded around 1100 as an administrative outpost of the Bishopric of Passau, which held considerable authority over this stretch of the Danube. Ownership later passed to the Counts of Schauenberg, marking a shift from church control to secular rule in the area.

The castle sits right on the border between Austria and Bavaria, and visitors standing on its walls can look directly across to the Bavarian side of the river. This feeling of being at a boundary between two regions is still very tangible when you walk through the site today.

The castle stands on a hill above the river and is clearly visible from the valley below, though reaching it requires a short uphill walk. Once at the top, it helps to move through the different parts of the site one by one to get a sense of how the whole place fits together.

The castle stood directly across from Obernzell on the Bavarian side, making it a natural watchtower over one of Europe's main river trade routes. The garrison here could observe every boat and raft passing between the two banks, which gave the castle a practical role that went well beyond simple defense.
