Sculpture landscape St. Margarethen

The Roman quarry features stone sculptures scattered across the landscape, creating an outdoor museum within a natural limestone setting at 47.8 degrees north.

In 1959, sculptor Karl Prantl established the European Sculptors Symposium, transforming the ancient quarry into an international gathering space for stone artists.

The limestone extracted from this quarry contributed to the construction of numerous Austrian landmarks, including Saint Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna.

The open-air arena accommodates 4,700 visitors and functions as a performance venue, particularly for opera productions during summer months.

Marine fossils from 20 million years ago remain preserved in the quarry walls, including ancient mussels, corals, and sea urchins.
