Sculpture landscape St. Margarethen
Sculpture landscape St. Margarethen, Sculpture park in Sankt Margarethen im Burgenland, Austria
Description
Sculpture landscape St. Margarethen is a former limestone quarry where contemporary stone artworks stand between tall rock walls. The space also functions as a natural amphitheater and is used for performances such as opera productions in summer.
History
In the 1950s, sculptor Karl Prantl transformed the quarry into an international arts venue through an annual symposium for stone sculptors. Since then, the site has remained a center for artistic experimentation with stone.
Culture
The site hosts works by artists from around the world, drawing visitors interested in contemporary art set within nature. The sculptures contrast with the rough stone surfaces and create a dialogue between artistic creation and the landscape itself.
Practical
Access to the artworks is unrestricted, and visitors can explore the quarry at their own pace. Sturdy footwear is recommended, as the ground is uneven with natural rock surfaces between the sculptures.
Did you know?
The rock walls contain remnants of an ancient sea and hold fossilized shells, corals, and sea urchins from prehistory. These fossils remain visible at the surface, telling a story spanning millions of years.
