Bürgeralpe, Mountain and ski resort in Mariazell, Austria

Bürgeralpe is a 1,270-metre mountain in the Türnitz Alps above Mariazell. Its 21-metre Erzherzog-Johann-Warte observation tower, built in 1908 of stamped concrete, stands on the summit. An eight-seat gondola built by Doppelmayr in 2019 runs from the valley station in Mariazell to the top, where the two-hectare Holzknechtland adventure park and a small artificial lake lie on the plateau.

A wooden lookout tower stood on the Bürgeralpe in the 19th century and was replaced in 1908 by a 21-metre tower of rammed concrete, originally named Franz Karl-Warte and called Erzherzog-Johann-Warte since 1959. The cable car from Mariazell opened on 5 February 1928, then Austria's seventh, with valley and mountain stations by Rudolf Frass, a pupil of Otto Wagner. The tower was fully renovated for Pope Benedict XVI's visit in September 2007.

The Erlebniswelt Holzknechtland, a roughly two-hectare open-air area on the plateau, presents historic forestry work, and a small artificial mountain lake there supplies snowmaking in winter. In summer the Mariazeller Bergwelle series stages open-air concerts on a lake stage. The mountain is also a starting point for sledging down to Mariazell.

The mountain is easily accessed via cable car that runs daily from Mariazell to the summit, making it accessible for visitors of varying fitness levels. Weather conditions change quickly at higher elevations, so bringing a light jacket and sturdy footwear is practical advice for any season.

The location functions differently in each season, with winter visitors focused on skiing while summer brings hikers exploring trails that reveal changing perspectives of the surrounding landscape. This seasonal transformation makes each visit feel distinct.
