Göttweig Abbey, Benedictine monastery in Furth bei Göttweig, Austria.

Göttweig Abbey is a Benedictine monastery on a hilltop in Lower Austria's Wachau region, overlooking the valley and surrounding vineyards. The complex includes a monastery church, residential buildings, and the renowned Imperial Staircase with significant artistic works.

The monastery was founded in 1083 and has shaped regional religious life ever since. Following a fire, it underwent major reconstruction in the early 18th century and received its present Baroque form.

The abbey houses religious artworks and historical objects that reflect spiritual life across centuries, displayed throughout its rooms for visitors to explore. These treasures show how faith shaped artistic creation at this location.

Visitors can explore the grounds during visiting hours, with guided tours available through the complex. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended since there are many stairs and paths, particularly the steep climb to reach the abbey.

The Imperial Staircase houses one of Austria's largest Baroque ceiling frescoes depicting a Roman emperor in mythological garb. This trompe-l'œil masterpiece impresses all who climb the stairs.
