Chorinsky-Klause, Historic dam structure in Bad Goisern, Austria.

The Chorinsky-Klause is a dam in the Weißenbach valley built from limestone and standing about 28 meters tall. It has a central sluice gate and two gravel gates that allow for controlled water release through the valley.

It was built between 1809 and 1819 under the direction of forest master Pfifferling and replaced earlier wooden structures used for timber transportation since 1526. This new stone structure allowed for much better control of water flow than the older wooden systems.

The structure is named after Count Ignaz Karl Chorinsky, a high-ranking court official who was present at its opening in the 19th century. Visitors can still see inscriptions on the dam that mark this historical connection.

The structure can be viewed from outside and is easily accessible from the valley path. Good footwear is recommended as the ground can be uneven and the surroundings sometimes damp.

The dam can release massive volumes of water in just a few minutes and has long controlled the river flow through the valley. After serious flooding in 2019, it underwent major restoration in 2023 with careful attention to its historical character.
