Gymnasium Mattersburg, architectural structure
Gymnasium Mattersburg is a secondary school located at Hochstraße 1 in the town center. The main building dates to the 1930s and was designed by Alfred Keller, with an extension added in the 1950s by Robert Kramreiter that integrates well with the original structure.
The school started as a boys' school before World War I and became a middle school in 1924. After closing during World War II, it reopened in 1945 as a full gymnasium to prepare students for university.
The school serves the multilingual community of the region, where students study German alongside Hungarian and Croatian. This reflects the diverse makeup of the area and shows how education here connects to the local population's background.
The school offers language, science, and sports programs with specialized labs and sports facilities on the grounds. The building sits easily visible from Hochstraße, with main entrances accessible from the street during school hours.
During and after the war years, the school used various buildings scattered around town, including hotels and a former commercial school. These makeshift learning spaces show how the institution kept education running despite difficult circumstances.
