Laudegg Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Ladis, Austria
Laudegg Castle is a fortified structure located in Ladis on a steep slate outcrop at 1,176 meters elevation. The remains occupy this elevated position overlooking the Oberinntal valley and the surrounding Samnaun Alps.
The castle was built around 1200 and first documented in 1239, after which it served as an administrative center for the region. By the 16th century it had lost its administrative role and the fortification gradually declined.
The tower house location along an ancient Roman road indicates its significance as a strategic control point throughout multiple historical periods.
Access to the ruins can be limited at certain times depending on local conditions and weather. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the path up is steep and the grounds are uneven.
Its steep location on the slate outcrop made it difficult to reach, which helped preserve sections of the structure through centuries. This challenging position meant fewer people could easily access and damage the stone walls over time.
