Schloss Mannsberg

Schloss Mannsberg is a medieval castle in Kappel am Krappfeld featuring a polygonal main courtyard with a four-story trapezoidal floor plan. The west wing contains arcade structures that create covered passage areas within the courtyard.

The castle was originally known as Magnesperc and came under the control of the Bishop of Brixen in the late 11th century through a transfer arranged by a Tyrolean nobleman. This change in ownership connected the site to the broader power structures of the Alpine region.

The chapel displays stucco work from the early 18th century that reflects the craftsmanship valued at that time. Visitors can see how artisans decorated interior spaces with these ornamental elements.

The site is reached by walking along a marked trail from a nearby parking area, which takes about ten minutes on foot. The route is clearly marked and accessible for visitors looking to explore the castle grounds.

The castle forms part of a dual site together with the Altmannsberg ruins, both rooted in fortification systems that date back before the year 1000. These two neighboring locations tell the story of early defensive structures in the Alpine valleys.
