Reichenstein Castle

Reichenstein Castle is a ruined fortress on a mountain ridge in Tragwein, Upper Austria, featuring thick stone walls and multiple towers. The remains of the medieval fortification are partially preserved today and show how people built such structures back then.

The castle was built in the 12th century when the region underwent territorial changes. It served as part of a network of fortifications meant to control and protect the frontier.

The castle shows how people built protected homes during the Middle Ages to keep themselves safe. You can see arrow slits and towers that still stand as reminders of that era.

You can reach the ruins by following a marked hiking trail from Tragwein. A parking area at the foot of the hill provides a convenient starting point for the walk up.

From its elevated position, the castle was designed to monitor passageways across the Mühlviertel region. This network of watchtowers was strategically placed rather than built as isolated forts to protect the territory.
