Schloss Petersberg

Schloss Petersberg is a stone fortress perched on a hill that rises above the valley floor and offers wide views across the surrounding landscape. The buildings arrange themselves around a central space where the chapel and residential quarters connect to one another.

The fortress took shape during the 12th and 13th centuries as a stronghold for a powerful family with lands across the Alpine region. It later transformed into a religious center that housed different monastic communities over time.

The chapel here has served religious purposes for centuries and remains central to the life of those living within its walls. Visitors can sense this spiritual function through the layout and use of the spaces throughout the fortress.

Access is via hiking trails that start from the parking area near the primary school in Silz and lead upward to the castle. The path climbs steeply and requires proper footwear along with time to make the ascent comfortably.

Digging within the castle grounds uncovered pottery pieces from prehistoric times, showing that people used this hilltop across many thousands of years. These finds suggest the location held importance long before the medieval fortress was ever built.
