Strechau Castle, Renaissance castle and automobile museum in Lassing, Austria.
Strechau Castle is a Renaissance castle in the municipality of Lassing in Styria, set on a rocky spur above the valley. It consists of several wings with decorated rooms, exhibition spaces, and baroque outbuildings that once served as storage.
The site was first recorded in 1074 as a military fortification built to protect the valley below. In the 16th century, the Hoffmann family transformed it into a residence by adding Renaissance design elements throughout the complex.
The so-called Paradise Hall features a painted wooden ceiling from the 16th century with ornamental patterns typical of the Renaissance period. The exhibition rooms show how the people who lived here expressed their faith through decoration and collected objects.
The castle is open only through guided tours, available from May through October. Tours start every hour, so it is easy to fit a visit into a day out in the area.
The baroque outbuildings on the grounds house one of the largest collections of historic Steyr automobiles in Europe. These cars were produced nearby, which makes the collection a direct link to the industrial story of this part of Austria.
