Villacher Burg

Villacher Burg is a Renaissance castle complex with three wings surrounding a courtyard featuring double-story arcades. A covered outdoor staircase connects the different sections and forms a distinctive part of the structure.

The structure was first recorded as Bamberger Castle in 1270, though archaeological evidence suggests construction began shortly after 1007. The complex underwent significant changes over the centuries through various renovations and expansions.

The chapel within the castle grounds serves the Old Catholic Church and remains active for worship today. This religious space connects the building's spiritual role to its architectural legacy.

The castle grounds house a museum exhibition displaying archaeological discoveries from different periods. Access is free and available daily, allowing visitors to explore the displays at their own pace.

Excavations uncovered a rare 12th-century clay figure of a tournament rider, representing one of Europe's oldest depictions of such a scene. This find highlights the site's importance in medieval society.
