Burg Wartenstein, Medieval castle in Raach am Hochgebirge, Austria
The stone fortress stands on a hill at 765 meters above sea level, overlooking the Schwarza Valley near Gloggnitz in Lower Austria.
Originally built in 1180 by Hermannus de Wartenstein as a border fortress, the castle underwent multiple expansions and changes of ownership through different noble families.
The Three Kings Chapel inside the castle maintains its Romanesque architectural elements, including an original capital on its exterior wall.
Visitors can access the elongated inner courtyard through the main gate or the pedestrian portal of the gate tower to explore the castle grounds.
The fortress contains an old cistern in its courtyard, topped with an ornate wrought iron cap dating from the 17th century.
