Burgruine Blumenegg, Castle ruin in Thüringerberg, Austria
Burgruine Blumenegg is a castle ruin in Thüringerberg with remains of a keep, residential building, chapel, walls, and support structures arranged around a courtyard. The complex sits on a mountain ridge between two valleys in the region.
The castle was established in 1258 as the center of the Blumenegg lordship within the County of Montfort and evolved over the following centuries. A major fire destroyed large sections of the structure in 1774.
The private group Burgfreunde Blumenegg maintains the ruins and established a cultural space in the courtyard for community gatherings and events.
The ruins stand on elevated terrain about an hour's walk from nearby villages, so sturdy shoes are recommended for visiting. Access to the site is open, though visitors should move carefully as the structures show age and erosion.
Local legends tell of a castle lord who hid treasures in tunnels beneath the fortification during the Turkish Wars period. These hidden passages remain partially intact today and intrigue visitors with their concealed entrances.
