Frauenburg, Medieval castle ruins in Unzmarkt-Frauenburg, Austria
Frauenburg is a castle ruin standing on a ridge in the Mur Valley, featuring remnants of defensive walls and tower structures. The site displays typical characteristics of a medieval fortification with preserved stone foundations and structural outlines.
The fortification was built in 1248 by a local nobleman and served to control the Mur Valley. It gradually lost its military importance and eventually decayed into ruins.
The nearby parish church displays one of the oldest German-language gravestones, belonging to the minnesinger who founded this fortress. This monument connects the castle's history with local reverence for its founder.
Visitors reach the ruins via a marked hiking trail starting from Unzmarkt-Frauenburg town center. The climb is moderate and offers views of the valley along the way.
The parish church nearby contains a large stone with an original Roman inscription that was later repurposed and installed upside down as a threshold. This stone shows how building materials were recycled across centuries.
