Johannesweg, Pilgrimage trail and hiking path in Mühlviertel, Austria.
The Johannesweg is a hiking and pilgrimage trail in the Mühlviertel region of Upper Austria, linking forests, meadows, and hilly upland terrain. The route passes through small villages, beside chapels, and near monasteries, with noticeable elevation changes along the way.
The route traces back to medieval pilgrim paths that connected monasteries and religious sites across the Mühlviertel. In its current form, it was redesigned as a marked trail to bring these old connections back into use.
The Johannesweg takes its name from the apostle John, to whom many of the chapels and churches along the route are dedicated. Visitors often stop at these small religious buildings, which are simple in style and open to anyone passing through.
The trail can be walked in day stages, so it is easy to choose just one section or to complete the full route over several days. Villages along the way have places to stay, which makes planning a multi-day walk straightforward.
The Johannesweg is part of a wider network of trails in the Mühlviertel, each named after one of the four evangelists. Together they form a web of routes that covers the region in different directions, so walkers can combine sections from different named trails.
